We are also telling you what to do if ever a public information officer asks you for more money in exchange for information. Section 7 of the Information Act deals with the determination of fee in lieu of information, but sub-section 1 of the same section states that this fee shall be determined by the Government. Under this arrangement, the governments have been given the right to decide the fees to be paid under the Right to Information Act in their various departments. The central and state governments have made separate fee rules under this authority and it has been clarified how much fee will be charged for applying and taking photocopies of information.
Sub-section 3 of section 7 details the responsibility of the Public Information Officer to inform the applicant how much he will have to pay for obtaining such information, calculating on the basis of the fee fixed by the Government. It is written in sub-section 3 that this fee shall be the same as may have been fixed by the government in sub-section 1. There is a difference in the fee rules of the central government and different state governments. Somewhere the fee for the application is Rs.10 and somewhere Rs.50. Similarly, for a photocopy of documents, somewhere Rs.2 and somewhere Rs.5 is charged.
